ECCP Supports the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II
One year after the murderous attack on the international Freedom Flotilla in international waters, carried out by Israeli military commandos
– which left nine people dead on the Mavi Marmara and saw dozens of others wounded, the solidarity ships hijacked, the passengers kidnapped (and in some cases beaten and tortured [1]) and their belongings stolen
– citizens from across the world have once again decided to peacefully sail to Gaza in the Spring of 2011.
They have chosen this method in order to :
– demand an end to the illegal siege of Gaza
– express firmly their belief that the law (international and humanitarian law, human rights and the right of peoples to self-determination) must prevail over the brutal force of occupation
– bring humanitarian aid to the 1.5 million Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Strip who, according to a coalition of rights groups, including Amnesty and Oxfam, have seen “little improvement” since the alleged easing of the siege six months ago [2]
Through a non-violent civil society based approach, organizations from many countries have now joined the six original organizers of the first Freedom Flotilla in a unified, renewed attempt to break the siege !
With the International Coalition for the Freedom Flotilla, residents of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States, with the active support of many in Latin American, are all developing national campaigns.
Their aim is to draw publicity to the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, to raise awareness among their fellow citizens about the situation in Palestine and in particular the siege of Gaza, and to raise the necessary funds in order to successfully realize this major act of international solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The ECCP, which has long been engaged in defending the rights of the Palestinian people, strongly supports this non-violent civil society solidarity initiative.
